Frontier Town Charleville 1865-1901 -by- Claire Wagner. ISBN 0864391072. Charleville History.
Australian History. Queensland Local History. The author describes the development of Charleville as a home base for the families
of itinerant bush workers; it became a major transport centre as a railway terminus, beginning as a depot for drovers, bullockies
and horse teamsters serving north Queensland, the river port at Bourke and the railhead at Orange, in the 1890s it became an
important centre for the early bush union movement. The early years were marked by conflict with the government's representative,
the Police Magistrate, and the local community again opposed the government during the Shearers' Strike of 1891, when troops were
despatched as strikebreakers; the same community shared a widespread enthusiasm for military ceremonial which accompanied the
establishment of local militia, foreshadowing the spirit of 1915. The book also describes the leading role taken by women and
includes much information not previously published. Illustrated with maps and black and white photographs. Used second hand softcover book.

Losing The Blanket: Australia and The End of Britain's Empire -by- David Goldsworthy (2002). ISBN 0522850286.
Australian History. Australian Political History. When Britain's sprawling empire wound down with
unexpected speed in the 1960s, Australia lost a comforting 'security blanket' and had to struggle to
re-establish and protect itself in a volatile and threatening world. This book shows how Australia's
foreign policy during the 1950s and 1960s was affected by the end of empire. Documents now available reveal
the effects of post-imperialism upon Australian policies in key areas such as defence planning in Southeast Asia,
the politics of the Commonwealth, the European Union, Australia's own colonial policy and relations with Britain
itself; as Menzies and then Holt looked to protect Australia's interests, the groundwork was laid for Australia's
involvement in Vietnam and for the pattern of Australia's foreign relations today. Used second hand softcover book. 209 pages.

The Rule Of Law In A Penal Colony Law And Power In Early New South Wales -by- David Neal (1991). ISBN 052137264X.
Australian Colonial history. This book, written by a lawyer, with a perspective based in both legal and social history, illuminates
the important role played by the concept of the rule of law in the transformation of New South Wales from penal colony to free society;
the settlers brought British legal and political institutions with them as part of their cultural baggage, and as the home government
was itself dependent on the rule of law for its own legitimacy, it could hardly reject pleas from a colony couched in those terms.
